1/13/2024 0 Comments Cosmic encounterEpic gaming moments stick with us long after we close the box, and Cosmic Encounter is responsible for more unforgettable moments than any other game I’ve ever played. If you enjoy hobby games, odds are you have lots of stories of “that one” game-that against-all-odds comeback, that natural 20 at the most dire moment, or that perfectly-timed action to reveal yourself as a Cylon. Don’t get me wrong, a staggering amount of great games have come out since then, but I cannot think of a single one that has surpassed the pure genius of Cosmic Encounter. However, despite all these developments and accomplishments, I truly believe that the pinnacle of game design was reached in 1977. Tens of thousands of games have been released amid a boom, the likes of which the hobby has never experienced before. In the four decades since Cosmic Encounter was created, the industry has seen unprecedented changes. But why do you love it? What sets it apart from the rest? It’s difficult to review something that is your favorite, whether it’s your favorite movie, book, or game. Basically, everyone is overpowered, so no one is. Cosmic Encounter has a system of checks-and-balances that keeps every power equally strong, albeit completely asymmetric. (They weren’t lying when they called it “A game of infinite possibilities.”) What may be even more amazing, though, is just how balanced it is, despite every power being outlandishly broken. With over fifty races in the base game, there are an unfathomable amount of possible combinations. Oracle: As a main player (Attacker or Defender), the Oracle forces his opponent to play her card first, face-up, before the Oracle decides what card to play.Virus: Instead of adding the Attack card to the number of ships, the Virus multiplies them.Void: Ships that lose to the Void don’t go to the Warp, but are instead permanently removed from the game.Macron: Each ship is worth four strength instead of one.Zombie: Lost ships never go to the Warp, but are instead returned to the player.Every single alien race fundamentally changes the way players have to think about the game. Unlike most other games where variable powers are simply “Draw one extra card” or “Gain one extra resource,” Cosmic takes it to the extreme. I realize that in 2018, variable player powers are standard fare, but Cosmic was the first game to use them, and no game since has used them in quite the same way. Cosmic Encounter has one key facet that absolutely makes the game: every player has an incredible, mind-blowing, infuriating, hysterical, unique, utterly game-breaking ability. This player-vs-player system of alliances and card-play is the foundational mechanic of the game, but by itself, it’s not terribly interesting. Here, we can see that green is currently winning.) (As a side note, the Warp tile also acts as a score track. This determines with whom she will have an encounter.īeing in the Warp is a bummer. On a player’s turn, she begins by flipping over a card from the Destiny deck. Each player begins with 20 ships, distributed evenly among their home planets. to have your ships on five planets belonging to other players). The goal is to establish colonies on five opposing planets (i.e. This year, in a self-aware, geek-referential celebration of the game’s 42nd anniversary, they have re-released Cosmic Encounter once again.Īt its core, Cosmic Encounter is a pretty simple game. Four decades, various versions, and numerous expansions later, it is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time.Ĭosmic‘s current publisher, Fantasy Flight, has taken the game to new heights, producing a definitive version in 2008. Coming from humble beginnings, the game was popular among a small niche, but over the years, it gained underground acclaim. In 1977, a group of sci-fi nerds created Cosmic Encounter, a game about colonizing alien planets. Jon Snow approaches the Frostfangs while scouting the Skirling Pass, one of the entrances to the mountain range. The Frostfangs are also the likely home of the remaining tribes of Giants, although their settlements are never described in the books, or shown in the TV series. The climate and geography are so dangerous that not even Wildlings can survive there during the winter, although rumors persist of volcano-heated valleys that can sustain life. An extremely inhospitable region, rangers of the Night's Watch very rarely venture anywhere near it. The Frostfangs are a mountain range north-west of the Shadow Tower. According to some stories, slavers from across the Narrow Sea carried off the villagers, while others believe that cannibals from Skagos attacked.Īs with any mysterious tragedy north of the Wall, the involvement of the White Walkers is also a very real possibility. Hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones, Hardhome was the only real settlement north of the Wall.Ī sudden and mysterious event resulted in the complete depopulation of the town though, and it has been considered cursed ever since. Hardhome is an abandoned town located north-east of the Wall. Very few living members of the Night's Watch have traveled as far north as the Fist, and fewer still beyond it. It was likely constructed for strategic purposes during the First Men's war with the Children of the Forest. The Fist is large hill that Lord Commander Jeor Mormont planned on fortifying to stop the approaching Wildling army.īefore the Wildlings even arrived though, the Night's Watch was attacked and defeated by a force of White Walkers, resulting in the death of almost the entire ranging party.Īs per its name, the Fist was originally built by the First Men, the initial settlers of Westeros who arrived from the east. Samwell Tarly and Gilly pass through White Tree again on their way back to the Wall, with Sam managing to slay a White Walker with a dragonglass dagger.įarther north is a geographical landmark known as the Fist of the First Men. White Tree is the fourth abandoned village that the Night's Watch passes while heading north on their ranging, indicating that the region was surprisingly populated. A massive heart tree towers over the village, inside of which the Wildlings had been burning their dead before they abadoned the settlement. During the Great Ranging led by Jeor Mormont, Jon Snow and other brothers of the Night's Watch came across White Tree to find it completely deserted. White Tree is one of several Wildling villages just north of the wall. It is therefore also home to some of the few remaining Children of the Forest in Westeros. Just beyond the Wall is the Haunted Forest, a large wooded region that has been slowly expanding over the centuries.ĭespite its moniker, there's been no definitive proof in the show or the books that the forest is "haunted" (aside from the recent presence of the White Walkers of course), and it is actually populated by a number of Wildlings, including Craster.Īdditionally, the forest is home to the Cave of the Three-Eyed Crow, the place where Bran Stark ends up at the end of Season 4. Some of it has been charted in the novels and accompanying material though, so we do have some knowledge surrunding at least a few locations beyond the Wall. Due to how little we've seen of it so far, what lies past the glimpses we've gotten of the far north remain a mystery. 1/13/2024 0 Comments Derek chauvin not guiltyThe Urban League of Southwestern Ohio in its released statement noted the world witnessed Derek Chauvin suffocate George Floyd for over nine minutes. We must focus on preventing police violence because too often the legal system does not serve justice that victims of police brutality deserve,” Howard Smit said. To protect our communities from brutality, we must dismantle the system that allows officers like Chauvin to serve as judge, jury and executioner of Black people. Officers improperly using deadly force should be terminated, barred from serving in law enforcement, criminally charged, and convicted. “We celebrate Chauvin’s conviction because officers are rarely held accountable for killing Black people. Rickell Howard Smith, executive director of ULGSO’s Center for Social Justice agrees the fight continues and we need to continue to protect our Black communities. Today we celebrate justice and tomorrow we keep up the fight.” Joe Gutierrez was maced and dragged out of his car by officers in Virginia. Lynch agreed with Roley’s sentiment saying, “while we thank God for this victory we must remember that while the trial was taking place, Daunte Wright was shot by a police officer only miles away from where George Floyd was killed and Army Lt. Follow the evidence, follow the truth and understand that Black Lives do matter,” she said. “This is what they (police departments) need to do. Others need to follow their lead and speak truth to power.” They said this is not their training and not what they do. She noted that Minneapolis Police Department set an example of not surrounding an officer with the “blue wall” when they do wrong. “I am happy the Floyd family and friend don’t have to suffer another day not knowing if that man will be convicted or not. As both a black man and a police officer, I too was angry.”Ĭommunity activist Iris Roley said she was grateful that jury saw what the rest of America witnessed during the 9-minutes Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck. I understand the angst that came the days, weeks, and months following the death of Mr. “I have said multiple times before that I denounce the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota in May of 2020 by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin faces being sentenced from 10 to 25 years for third-degree murder, 10 to 40 years for second-degree murder and 3 to 10 years for manslaughter.Ĭincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac released a statement on Facebook after the verdict was read. George Floyd is gone, and no verdict can bring him back, but today, that Minneapolis jury sent a message that will ring out around the world: Black lives matter.”įollowing the verdict, Judge Peter Cahill revoked Chauvin’s bail and he was remanded to Hennepin County Jail until his sentencing in the next eight weeks. I thought about George Floyd’s family - the verdict showed what they already knew: that he matters. Damon Lynch, pastor of New Prospect Church and community activist.Ĭincinnati Council Member Jan Michele Lemon Kearney said, “I was relieved and elated when I heard the verdict. I hope that gives courage to other officers to speak out when they see injustice among their ranks,” said Rev. “Justice was served today for the Floyd family, the State of Minnesota and the nation, it was heartening and I hope instructive to see so many active police officers cross the thin blue line to say that Derek Chauvin did was wrong. Blacks in America experienced a range of emotions when the verdict was read with some shouting for joy, some experiencing disbelief, but many felt an overwhelming sense of relief that justice prevailed in the May 2020 murder of George Floyd. 1/13/2024 0 Comments Mindful eatingAcknowledging your responses to food based on your senses without judgment (e.g., like this texture, hate that taste).Using all of your sense in choosing and experiencing food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body.Staying aware of what you are doing and the effects that it has on your body-both good and bad.To break it down even further, there are four characteristics of mindful eating when you are eating mindfully, you are: In other words, mindful eating is all about being aware of how we feel when we eat. “… a non-judgmental awareness of physical and emotional sensations associated with eating”. 1/12/2024 0 Comments Popshot urban dictionaryThat experience left me with the strong impression that Urban Dictionary is a very unreliable source of accurate real-world definitions, in addition to offering virtually no practical insight into how the meanings of words and phrases have evolved over time. I am very interested in the meanings and origins of words and phrases-and yet I think that I've used Urban Dictionary as a reference source in my answers exactly once, in response to the question What does “fleek” mean and when was it first used? And even then, I was more interested in investigating the theory that an Urban Dictionary user was the original source of the phrase "on fleek" than in relying on its multitude of arbitrary, sometime-compatible/sometimes-contradictory definitions for my understanding of the phrase. In other words, I don't think the UD reference is the sole cause of the downvotes, but it's the UD reference absent any other supporting research for this particular question. It might have gotten upvotes as a comment, but, in its current form, it was vulnerable to downvotes as an answer. is perhaps looking for a literary or grammatical term, and all your answer does is suggest something from the UD – something that has a rather "amateurish" feel. However, if you can find and cite other published instances where that same phrase is used, then maybe the UD's definition, coupled with the other references you've found, could make a good answer.Īs it stands now, it seems like the O.P. Going back your reference, if the only place I can find the term Question-Statement is in the Urban Dictionary, perhaps it's not good to use that as an answer to the O.P.'s question. Then the UD probably isn't a good reference to substantiate the answer. I'm looking for a clinical term for a person who thinks too highly of himself. In that case, I'd say the UD is fine, particularly if someone is wanting to suggest a term that might not be widely known.
